Dr.-ing Simon G. Kariuki

Simon G Kariuki works as the Senior Manager, Regulatory Affairs for New Nuclear Growth and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in Canada. His team is responsible for developing and implementing licensing strategies for new reactors.

Prior to that he was the Manager for Environment at OPG’s Pickering Nuclear Generating Site. Kariuki holds a Bachelor of Technology in Production from Moi University, Msc. In Quality, Safety and Environment from University of Madgeburg (Germany) and a PhD in Engineering from Technical University of Berlin (Germany).

His career in nuclear started in 2008 after joining AMECNSS , a Canadian company, where he worked as a Human Factors and Risk Engineer supporting various nuclear stations in Ontario. In 2009, he joined Ontario Power Generation as a Reactor Safety Engineer. He was instrumental during the development of OPG’s Nuclear Fleet (10 reactors) probabilistic safety assessments for Internal Events, Seismic, High Wind and Fire. He led various novel assessments that were initiated by the nuclear industry to mitigate Fukushima type accidents.

He has also worked in incident investigations and formulation of Corrective Actions Plans for process improvement for OPG nuclear fleet. Kariuki is a professional engineer in the province of Ontario.
